Krusteaz Protein Pancake Mix Review

Do you miss getting breakfast in a restaurant? I do! Pancakes are one of the menus that don't really work with To-go orders during this coronavirus pandemic, I just have to cook at home. That's why we bought a big bag of pancake mix recently, Krusteaz Protein Pancake Mix.

One good thing about making pancakes at home is that you can make healthier pancakes than restaurants with whole grain flour pancake mix. I know that white flour pancakes are softer and tastier, but health is becoming more important as I get old.

Krusteaz Protein Pancake Mix

I had two choices of pancake mix when I shopped at Sam's Club a few weeks ago; big and cheap regular pancake mix and small and pricey whole grain pancake mix. I decided to go with the fancier one for our health. The 57 ounce (1.61 kilograms) bag of Krusteaz Protein Pancake mix was $7.98.

I like that we only need to add water for this pancake mix, since we don't go shopping as often and may run out of milk or eggs, these days.

Back side

If you want more protein and richer flavors, you can add milk and eggs instead of water, but this time I just added water to see how it tastes itself.

Directions 1

The best way to make a perfect pancake is to follow the product's directions. To lightly grease the griddle, I usually add a drop of oil and wipe it off with a paper towel. And, as mentioned in the package, the secret to make a thick and fluffy pancake I recently found out was not to mix too much! Basically, mix the pancake mix with water (or milk and eggs) very gently only a few times, even if the flour is not completely mixed with water. It's also a good tip to flip the pancake just once.

Directions 2

They also have a recipe for savory breakfast muffins and protein waffles.

It's astonishing how much sodium is in the pancake mix, especially since it doesn't taste salty. It's made of whole grain flour, but it doesn't mean it's low in calories...  (・ิω・ิ)

Additional Information

I purchased this product on April 21, 2020 and it expires on February 27, 2021.

Expiration date

This is a whole grain flour pancake mix, but the color doesn't look as dark as I expected.

So how did it taste? When I first took a bite, the smell of flour was quite strong, but the more I ate it, the less it smelled. Although this pancake is named 'protein pancake', they weren't as weird as other protein pancake mixes made of almond flour-like things. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and tasted healthier than regular pancakes.

I might add milk and egg instead of water next time and see if they would make the taste richer. I would like to try other protein pancake mixes and compare them with this brand.
