Trader Joe's Organic Tofu Review

Tofu is one of the ingredients that I get regularly as it is a great source of protein and a highly utilized ingredient. Trader Joe's is an excellent option to get tofu for those who live in areas where there is no Asian market nearby.

It was the first time I tried Trader Joe's tofu. I often buy tofu from Korean markets because they are more conveniently located for me than a Trader Joe's is. The Korean market generally has three types of tofu based on its firmness; soft, medium and firm. They sometimes have silken or medium firm as well. It is great to have options based on what you are planning to cook. Soft tofu is good for soup and firm one is good for frying.

Trader Joe's Organic Tofu

Trader Joe's Organic Tofu has a great price. It's only $1.99 for 19 ounces (539 grams) and it's organic. This is the best price that I've ever seen in organic tofu. In Asian markets, the best price I could find for regular tofu was $0.99 and it gets a lot more expensive if it's organic. Definitely over $2.

19 OZ for $1.99

Trader Joe's Organic Tofu is larger than typical tofu products in the Asian market, which are usually under 500 grams.

Tall and big container

Trader Joe's Organic Tofu contains 60 calories per serving. The serving size is 3 ounces (84g, about 1/6th of the package). The whole package is about 360 calories and the protein is the highest nutrient. The ingredients are as simple as 3 ingredients; water, organic soybeans and calcium sulfate.
The expiration date is distant. I purchased this product on March 22, 2020 and it expires on May 20, 2020.

Sometimes, Asian products in non-Asian markets are not as authentic. However, since tofu is not a complicated ingredient to produce, you don't have to worry about that as much. This tofu looks same as the one from Asian markets.

Stayed in a good shape

The package doesn't indicate the firmness of the tofu like ones in the Asian markets. In my opinion, Trader Joe's Organic Tofu is around medium. It's softer than It looks in the pictures. In fact, this firmness will make the tofu multi-purpose. It is soft enough for soup and firm enough for frying.

Sliced tofu

When cooking with tofu, touch it as little as possible to keep the shape . With Trader Joe's Organic Tofu, I made a spicy tofu dish with bean sprouts (콩나물두부찜). After putting the tofu in the pan, I turned it over only once, since the tofu is fragile.

Spicy tofu with bean sprouts

Trader Joe's Organic Tofu was as satisfying as an Asian brand, and being organic with a great price adds more merit to the product.
